Mixing the Lye Solution
In Area One
1.PUT ON YOUR
GOGGLES AND GLOVES
2.Fill your large container with frozen water
and ice cubes
3.Place your DRY sodium hydroxide container on
the scales and set to zero
4.Carefully weigh out correct amount.
5.Put the already weighed out cold water jug in
a well ventilated area.
6.Gently and carefully pour the Sodium Hydroxide
into the cold water while stirring and stir until completely dissolved.
THE WATER ON TO THE LYE – this can cause the mixture to erupt like a volcano.
BREATH IN THE FUMES – although these do not harm you they can be very
uncomfortable and make you cough.
If any lye
solution touches your skin quickly wash under cold running water
Make sure no
solution splashes in your eyes – if this happens flush your eyes in cold water
and seek medical help if necessary
7.As the lye dissolves it will heat up so place
this in your ice container. It will be cloudy to start with but will soon
8.Place the thermometer in the lye solution and
monitor the temperature until it reaches 90°- 110°F (32° - 43°C)
Preparing your oils/butters
In Area Three
1.Place water in the base of your double burner,
place onto the heat. Add the oils/butters to the top part of the burner. Heat
until all has melted. If you do not own a double burner simply place a
heatproof bowl over water in a large saucepan.
2.Take melted oils/butters to Area Two and place into your container.
3.Place thermometer into the oils/butters and
monitor until the temperature reaches 90° - 110°F (32° - 43°C).
